Where it StartedThe earliest known reference about music therapy was in a magazine that had the title of "Music Physically Considered" in the late 1700s. In the 1800s there were two medical articles written about it. They were written by Edwin Atlee and Samuel Adams. The first recorded music therapy intervention and the first music therapy experiment was also in the 1800s.
Growing InterestIn the 1900s interest in music therapy started to increase. Many music therapy programs started to form. Some organizations that formed were the National Society of Musical Therapeutics, National Association for music in hospitals, and etc. These organizations led to the first books, articles and classes on music therapy.

Key Players in Music Therapy DevelopmentIra Altschuler-A music therapist and psychiatrist who encouraged music therapy for around 30 years.
William van de Wall- He evolved the use of music therapy in state-funded facilities. He is known for writing the first "how to" music therapy article, E. Thayer Gaston-He was known as the "Father of Music therapy" because he helped develop music therapy in the U.S. Other History-In the 18th century studies were done to see the effect of music on the human body. They found that it effects the cardio output, respiratory rate, pulse rate, circulation, blood pressure and etc.
-In the 19th century studies were done to see how music effects psychologically. They found that it has a big impact on emotion. - World War II lead to the increase use of music in hospitals because they realized music can help people with mental illnesses. |
